Meet the artist
Jean Coutellier
Jean Coutellier, also known as Woody Art, is a Belgian sculptor born in 1959. A self-taught artist, he has long held a deep fascination for wood, which he considers a living material—rich with memory, texture, and silent beauty.
Wood as a Living Material
Jean Coutellier works with wood gathered directly from nature: trunks, branches, roots, and ivy. Over time, he has discovered that ivy, when carefully treated, can rival ivory in both delicacy and elegance. His detailed and thoughtful process allows the natural character of the wood to emerge, giving life to singular pieces that blend strength with organic refinement.
A Practice Rooted in Precision and Poetry
Based in the Meuse Valley, he draws inspiration from the surrounding wooded landscapes that inform his creative world. Jean places great importance on the precision of his gesture, sculpting each piece entirely by hand. This level of dedication gives his work a distinctive authenticity, imbued with sensitivity and a profound respect for the material.
Organic, Meditative Aesthetics
Jean Coutellier’s sculptures are characterized by an organic and contemplative aesthetic. Sometimes bordering on abstraction, his forms evoke vegetal growth, rooted movement, and silent forces. His work invites viewers to slow down, to observe, and to reconnect with an instinctive, timeless link to nature.
Through wood, he sculpts not only material, but also time, memory, and the quiet bond between humanity and the natural world.
Exhibitions and Recognition
Represented by The 6A Gallery, Woody Art has exhibited his work in various shows, including the Affordable Art Fair in Brussels, where his serene yet powerful creations have drawn the attention of collectors and art lovers alike.
